We all have our different skin issues, and we all have our different concerns: Does this particular treatment suit my skin? Will I be able to afford it? Is it the same treatment as the one trending on Insta right now?
Yes, we are all a little bit different from each other, aren’t we? But we guess there’s something that all of us skin fans can agree on: our modern age is a very exciting time for skin care.
There are a lot of different treatments and procedures now that were not available just merely a decade ago.
Take the wide variety of different dermal fillers already available. Just merely two decades ago the only “injectable” treatment really known to us was botox. We’re not saying that other injectables were not available. It’s just that they weren’t really as popular to us back then as they are now.
Speaking of these injectables, those are exactly what we are going to talk about today. They are very popular already, for sure, but there are still a lot of us that don’t know a lot about them. There are still a lot of us who are confused which one is which?
What is Botox?
Botox, which gets its name from botulinum toxin, is an injectable treatment that seeks to temporarily paralyze muscles. By doing so, it relaxes the muscles and removes fine lines and wrinkles —especially those due to too much muscle activity (such as your frown lines when you’re frowning, or smile lines when you’re smiling).
It is very effective. In fact, several studies have proven that it’s not only good for treating wrinkles, but can also help remedy other health problems like migraine and too much sweating.
We’re sure that we will still hear a lot of good things from Botox in the future. But you get why it’s still extremely popular after all these years, right?
Anyway, just a word of caution, though. Since it is a toxin (and a very potent one at that), it is not an injectable treatment to be taken lightly. You should receive it at an exactly calculated amount, which is why we recommend getting the treatment done only from a certified specialist.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Let’s now move on to dermal fillers. Dermal fillers, like Botox, are injectable treatments that seek to help with wrinkles and fine lines.
So how does it work?
As we age, our muscles naturally loses its volume. So does our bones. In other words, they shrink. This leaves our skin saggy and loose.
Fortunately, there are different kinds of dermal fillers that can fill in those lost volume. They contain biocompatible compounds that can be injected safely into the skin and get rid those of gaps. By doing so, your face will regain its youthful volume and stretch out loose-hanging skin.
There are different kinds of dermal fillers. They are usually determined by the type of compound they carry. You can visit your nearest skincare clinic to know more about each of them and figure out which one is best for you.
What Do They Have In Common?
We understand why Botox and dermal fillers are usually shelved by some people into the same category. After all, they have quite a few things in common:
- They are both injectables. This means that their procedures are both non-invasive and are done by releasing a compound into our body with the help of a syringe.
- They both deal with wrinkles. Both treatments can give an efficient solution to your fine lines.
- They are non-surgical. As what we have mentioned, both of them only involve the use of syringe and are non-invasive. That means that you don’t need to go under the knife in order to get your wrinkles removed (as compared from undergoing a face lifting procedure). Because of this, they’re also both significantly cheaper compared to a surgical procedure and promises faster recovery and less down time.
These benefits are good to keep in mind if you lead a very busy life or you have a very hectic work schedule that won’t permit you to spend a few days to rest at the moment.
What Are Their Differences?
However, the three points we have mentioned above are the only things that these two treatments have in common.
You must know by now with the help of our discussions earlier that they don’t have the same mechanism in dealing with wrinkles. Botox, in the simplest terms possible, freezes time by paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles. While dermal fillers, on the other hand, do so by plumping up the areas of your face that lost its fullness.
They also use different substances. Botox uses botulinum toxin while dermal fillers use different compounds depending on the brand used.
They have different effects too. Botox will restrict you from using the muscles it paralyzed, while dermal fillers will not. You will still be able to utilize all the muscles on your face, but you will certainly have that feeling of fullness.
Finally, they have different result durations. As what we have mentioned above, Botox is a temporary remedy. It will only last for three to four mounts. Meanwhile, dermal fillers are not permanent as well, but their results can last longer than Botox depending on the brand used.
In the end, it will still be up to you to determine which treatment you want to go for together with your skincare specialist. We recommend booking an appointment beforehand so they can answer any of your queries that we might not have been able to address in this article.
