Age/Brown Spots

The primary culprit causing areas of your skin to darken in pigmentation and grow larger in size is sun damage. Age spots, brown spots or sunspots are common names describing this darkening pigmentation.

Ultraviolet light causes sun damage to the skin. It’s a fact most everyone knows. What’s not as commonly known is when sun exposure happens early in life, it creates deep dermal layers of damage known as primary sun damage. Secondary sun damage is everyday exposure to unprotected skin throughout the lifetime of a person.

Age spots commonly appear on the areas of skin which receive the most sun exposure, the face, the back of hands, shoulders, upper back, and forearms.

How we treat it

Broadband Light Therapy

One of our preferred treatments for brown spots is Broadband Light (BBL) therapy, a laser that restructures the skin of the hands on a molecular level, restoring the skin by destroying the cells that produce melanin. BBL works by removing the source of the hyper pigmentation. It evens the complexion and introduces heat into the skin, increasing the production of collagen. With minimal to no downtime, you can expect mild redness and a darkening of pigmentation the day of the treatment. Once the micro crust or pigmentation sloughs off,  your hands will appear more even and glow.

Chemical Peels or Microdermabrasion

Chemical peels or microdermabrasion may also be used to treat brown spots.  These procedures sand or burn off the outer layers of the skin so new skin can grow in its place.
